MOTHER PLAY
by: Paula Vogel
Directed by Steve Rosenbaum
Paula Vogel’s MOTHER PLAY spans four decades as it chronicles the turbulent, funny, and heartbreaking dynamics of a dysfunctional family as they navigate five separate evictions from various apartments across Washington, DC. The play is an episodic snapshot of the family shifting from the early 1960s through the Sexual Revolution, The Disco Era and into the 1990s. Every change in era is marked by a new eviction and evolving family tension fueled by the clash between the gin soaked, chain smoking mother’s traditional expectations for her children vs. their identity as part of the LGBTQ+ community. The 2024 Broadway production was Tony nominated for Best Play, as well as nominations for the entire cast, including Jessica Lange and Jim Parsons.
